Four young women made Cayman Brackers proud when they graduated from the International College of The Cayman Islands on Thursday 20 February, held at the Cayman Islands Baptist Church in Savannah.
With hundreds of friends and family in attendance, the graduates received their Certificate of Degrees to a packed house which included the Minister of Education who addressed the gathering. The Master of Ceremonies Interim President Raymond Hayes kept the evening and the event flowing smoothly, making the time pass by quickly. The national anthem and national song was sung by Melissa M. Smith who gave a beautiful rendition of both.
After the invocation by Dr. Anthony Husemann and the greetings by Dr Hayes, the Hon Tara Rivers Minister of Education, Training and Employment made her remarks, which was followed by an inspiring address to the students by the student speaker Damara Bonner.
Once the presentation of awards was over and the speaker introduced, Dr Tasha Ebanks-Garcia addressed the graduates with a rousing speech, which received a standing ovation, encouraged all regardless of age. The speech left the audience inspired towards achieving goals and pressing forward no matter how far away those goals may seem.
One of the attendees told The Cayman Reporter, “the speech has given me new found respect for Dr Tasha. It was the hardest thing for me not to burst into tears whilst she was speaking, as it takes a lot of courage for someone to stand before so many people and tell them your life story. Especially when she was once asked to leave the first college she attended because she did not keep up her grades. Then after focusing on her goals and not her looks to receive her Doctorate whilst having to balance being a wife and mother, its not an easy thing to do, I can attest to that.”
The Cayman Brac graduates, in their own right, were also an inspiration to those in attendance, as they are all working individuals some with families, who had to make many sacrifices on their way to receiving their degrees.
The graduates are in alphabetical order Natalya Bodden Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Janet Holness Bachelor of Science Degree Liberal Studies: Tourism Management, Reena Medina Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, and Tiffany Scott Master of Science Degree Business Administration.
