Hurricane and tropical storm alerts, signals and flags

Understanding tropical and hurricane storm signal flags are key during hurricane season. Warning flags are flown from a selection of locations across Cayman, including Owen Roberts International Airport, fire stations and police stations, the National Museum of the Cayman Islands, and the Courts Office. Note, that hurricane signal flags are square and tropical storm signal flags are triangular.

Alert – One square or triangular red flag
When notification is received that a hurricane or tropical storm is likely to strike Cayman within the next 72 hours or more.
Watch – One square or triangular red flag with a black square in the centre
When notification is received that a hurricane or tropical storm is likely to strike within the next 48 hours.

Warning – two square or triangular red flags with a black square in the centre
Once notification is received that a hurricane or tropical storm is likely to strike within the next 36 hours.

All Clear – One square or triangular green flag
When notification is received that a hurricane or tropical storm has passed, or no longer poses a threat.
