Prepare your disaster kit

Don’t be blown away this hurricane season. With few hurricanes over the past years, it’s easy to become complacent.

Ensuring you have a disaster kit is extremely important during hurricane season. Here are some of the most critical supplies to have on hand, well before a hurricane threatens.

At least a three-day and preferably a seven-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day)
Non-perishable food, at least enough for 3 to 7 days
A battery operated radio and flashlight, with plenty of spare batteries
Manual can opener
Aluminium foil
Zip lock bags
Cooking tools
Charcoal grill
Pots and pans
Paper plates
Plastic utensils and cups
Garbage bags
Rain gear, including sturdy shoes
Whistle, to signal for help if needed
Two coolers, one for food storage the other for ice
First aid kit
Prescription and non-prescription medicines
Paper towels
Fully charged cell phone and battery-powered cell phone chargers
Extra cash
Blankets, sleeping bags, books, and games (especially if evacuating)
For babies – bottles, pacifier, diapers, formula, sterile water, clothing, bedding
Moisture/disinfectant wipes
Toilet paper
Toiletries, including deodorant, soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste
Lighter or matches
Paper, pens, and pencils
Basic tool kit, including hammer, pliers, wrenches, and screwdrivers
Tarps, or roll of plastic sheeting
Duct tape
Work gloves and rubber gloves
Unscented bleach to clean up and disinfect water
Garbage can or bucket with tight fitting lid for carrying water or using as an emergency toilet

Be prepared
You can take several basic steps right now to protect your family and your home from disaster.

Come to a decision about:
Where do you plan to ride out a hurricane,
Where are you going to keep your pets during a hurricane,
Where will you store your car during a hurricane,

Test emergency equipment such as generators and flashlights
Trim trees that could fall on your roof
Check shutters are working properly
Review insurance coverage

Important documents
Store important documents in a waterproof or watertight container. Include passports, driver’s license, vehicle registration and title, birth and marriage certificates, insurance policies, medical and immunisation records, will and power of attorney documents, bank account numbers, land and property titles, and a list of important phone numbers. You may want to copy your computer hard drive to a portable disk or thumb drive as well and store this in your container.
